Ethnomycology Ethical Guidelines

This document provides a framework for decision-making and conduct for the ethnomycological research included in the Ancestral & Traditional Uses of Fungi's map. It reflects the vision of the Fungi Foundation, with the goal of facilitating ethical conduct, equitable relationships, and reciprocal responsibility among all parties, fostering a commitment to meaningful collaboration. We acknowledge the uniqueness of each culture, and this document is intended to be a living document that will adapt over time to align with evolving understandings, contributions, and circumstances.

Oral History Campaign: Ancestral & Traditional Uses

Did your elders tell you a story about fungi? Do you know if your grandparents went mushroom foraging? Do you know if anyone in your family or community uses fungi for medicinal, ritual or artistic purposes?

We have cataloged over 200 uses of fungi in 45 different countries, creating a comprehensive ethnomycological global index based on available public information in order to protect this precious knowledge. We believe that these ancestral relationships hold the key to a sustainable future.

Our actions are guided by an ethical framework to promote ethical conduct. Therefore, one of our commitments is the prior informed consent for any information you might share with us.

Do you have a story you would like to share with us? We are looking to incorporate ancestral and traditional uses that have been taught from one generation to another through oral history. We invite you to complete this form, which has been created in accordance with our Ethical Guidelines.

Old-Growth
Forests

These forests have been important witnesses of human and climatic history, storing a large amount of information. They have a high resilience capacity, with high concentrations of organic matter and carbon storage, and hold a large, and sometimes unique, diversity of plant, animal and fungi species. We are working on a unified definition of old-growth forests that recognizes their importance on the ecosystems and their ancestral history to increase scientific explorations and protect them.

Historias y Memorias Mazatecas is a project born from the dedication of a Mazatec family to preserve and celebrate their traditions and cultural heritage and it needs our support now. It's time for us to give back.
