Fungus of the Day
Probably the most famous and easily recognizable fungi. It is a mycorrhizal species that grows under conifers such as Pinus radiata. The pileus is semi-globose and bright red when young; as it matures, it becomes convex to flattened and red-orange, with white, pyramid-shaped scales that are very delicate to the touch. It contains substances that make it highly hallucinogenic and toxic. It is used in shamanic rituals by Indigenous peoples of North America, Central America, Siberia, Northern Europe, and India as a hallucinogen.
